ADVANCED SEARCH INSTRUCTIONS

Advanced search provides a powerful Boolean search. The following operators may be used:
and or The title(t=), name(n=) and the imprint(i=) fields may be searched. Note that to search for more than one word in a title, such as a book with gold and silver in the title printed in Dublin the search is
t=gold and t=silver and i=Dubl
The imprint field contains the place of publication, usually in the language of the publication and often abbreviated, and the date of publication.
The use of the * is allowed in all fields. This is used at the end of the initial letters of a word. For example if you want to list all books on mathematics it is best to use t=mathem* as this will retrieve books in Latin, French, Italian etc.
Beware of using very common short prefixes, for example: t= per* yields over 19,000 results.

To get a list of mathematical books printed in the 1500s the query is:
t=mathem* and i=15*

If you want to list all books which deal with Syrian or Chaldean codices the query is
(t=syr* or t=chald*) and (t=code* or t=codi*)
If you look at the returned list of 15 books you will see why the *s were placed in these positions.

The following query finds 19 books annotated by Ussher:
(t=usser*) and (t=not* or t= auto* or t=manu*)
If you want all the incunabula (books published in the 15th century ) the query is:
i=14* or i=1500.
